Daimler - the brand with the star

The roots of the Daimler AG date back to the years 1886/1887 when Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler developed vehicles with internal combustion engines. This is regarded as being the birth date for the development of the modern automobile. Today, the Daimler AG is one of the most successful automotive manufacturers in the world.

With its business segments Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes–Benz Vans, Daimler buses and Daimler Financial Services the company is one of the largest providers of premium cars and utility vehicles globally. Besides Mercedes–Benz, the brand portfolio includes the brands Smart, Maybach, Freightliner, Western Star, Fuso, Setra, Orion and Thomas Built Busses.

Some facts about the company

  • The pioneers of automobile manufacture towards the end of the 19th century were Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900) and Carl Benz (1844-1929). They had never met personally, but simultaneously developed the world's first automobiles in Mannheim (Benz) and Stuttgart (Daimler) in the year 1886. Today, we can hardly think of an invention that has had a more enduring influence on the world's development. Daimler with his Daimler Motorengesellschaft (DMG) and Benz with his Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik had set up the predecessor companies which merged to form Daimler-Benz AG in 1926.

  • Businessman Emil Jellinek borrowed the name of his third child to enter Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft cars in races under the pseudonym “Mercédès” – especially the Nice Week. Owing to an unparalleled series of successes, Jellinek and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft signed an agreement on the sale of cars and engines in April 1900. Mercedes (without the accents) was made the product designation for Daimler vehicles and was patented as the brand name in 1902.

  • Alfred Neubauer, manager of the Automobile Test Department, devised a system involving flags and signal boards to transmit the tactical information to the drivers. At the "Solitude Racing" in 1927 he invented the position of the Racing Team Manager for the first time.

  • From 1934 to 1939 the Mercedes Silver Arrows achieved numerous grand prix victories and speed records.

  • Throughout the 1950s Daimler-Benz almost held a monopoly as manufacturer of diesel engines.

  • 1998 merger with Chrysler Corporation to form DaimlerChrysler AG.

  • 2007 Demerger of the Chrysler unit and to Cerberus Capital Management in May 2007 for USD 6 billion.

  • Today Daimler is owned by European, American and other international investors. There are more than one billion shares outstanding (December 2012). Even after 125 years, Daimler AG carries on the pioneering spirit and outstanding quality standards of the original founders and sets the pace in the international automotive industry with high-quality, technologically innovative products.

  • In 2013 Daimler introduced the new E-Class, a new S-Class and the CLA-Class.
