Trade and hedge KOSPI 200 Derivatives after Korean trading hours
Eurex, Europe’s largest derivatives exchange and a subsidiary of Deutsche Börse Group, and the Korea Exchange (KRX) joined into a product cooperation in 2010. Right from the start, the project received strong commitment from major banks and financial institutions around the world and has been a great success ever since.
On 30 August 2010, Eurex Exchange and the Korea Exchange (KRX) made the KOSPI 200 Options, one of the most heavily traded options contract in the world at that time, available on the Eurex/KRX Link to provide its market participants with trading and hedging opportunities for KOSPI 200 positions during core European and North American trading hours.
The daily average trading volume of the Eurex KOSPI in H1 2019 is over 165,000 contracts, which represented around 5.83% of the day time volume. Currently, there are close to 50 active Eurex and KRX members on the Eurex/KRX Link.
On 20 April 2016, Eurex and the KRX jointly announced the extension of the cooperation by another three years and the listing of the Mini KOSPI 200 Futures on the existing Eurex/KRX Link. Just like the daily expiring futures contracts on the KOSPI 200 Options, the Mini KOSPI 200 Futures is listed as fully fungible daily futures to allow a transfer of open interest from Eurex to the KRX. The Mini KOSPI 200 Futures on Eurex will be the perfect hedging vehicle for the KOSPI 200 Options on Eurex, both complementing each other.
The strategic cooperation between KRX and Eurex has already proven very beneficial for both Eurex and KRX customers. It will continue to provide market participants with more trading and hedging opportunities on both exchanges.
The Korea Exchange was created through the integration of Korea Stock Exchange, Korea Futures Exchange and KOSDAQ Stock Market under the Korea Stock & Futures Exchange Act. The securities and derivatives markets of former exchanges are now business divisions of Korea Exchange: the Stock Market Division, KOSDAQ Market Division and Derivatives Market Division. KRX's flagship product, the KOSPI 200 Options, is one of the most heavily traded equity index derivatives contracts in the world with a daily average of approx. 1.95 million contracts in 2015.
